Activities

Summer is winding down, but events are gearing up for ”End of Summer into Fall” fun in Avila Beach. Here are a few must do’s:

The popular Labor Day weekend in Avila features a family concert festival at the Avila Beach Golf Resort called Pops by the Sea 2010, featuring La Musica Latina. Summer salsa, tropical tangos, racy rumbas and special guest artist, Brazilian singer and guitarist Teka. Concert starts at 4:00 under the sun, great setting.

Apples are here! Great reason to drive the incredible See Canyon and pick up the delicious locally grown apples. When I visited the apple farm, they had Empire, Mutsu, Gravenstein, Gala and Laura Reds - all really good and juicy.

Bob Jones Trail makeover is now complete and looking good for your walk/bike ride again.

Paddle boarding is taken off in Avila.  This is the newest rage in water sports and Avila is one of the best places to experience it.

Any Jimmy Messina fans out there?  Not far from Avila Beach at The Clark Center in Arroyo Grande, Jimmy is coming on August 10th at 8:00 pm.  I was lucky to see him with Kenny Loggins in Santa Ynez a few years back when they first reunited.  Great concert!

Remember, September is normally the nicest time of year in Avila Beach and a great time to buy real estate.

I’m happy to share recommendations about some of my Avila Beach “Favorites”:

Restaurants
Avila Beach features several eateries recommended. Custom House, Pete’s, Fat Cats and Woodstones are my some of my favorites. Custom House (downtown) is the higher end, Pete’s (very casual) for lunch on the Harford Pier,  Fat Cats (across from the Harford Pier) – for breakfast and Woodstones Deli, which is at the entrance of San Luis Bay Estate – a great place for sitting outdoors on a sunny day.

Where to stay
Favorites in Avila include Avila La Fonda, steps from my office, Joe Momma’s Beachstay and Avila Lighthouse Suites, all in downtown Avila Beach. Just outside downtown is another favorite, Avila Village Inn, just a mile or so down the road.

Things to do
There is lots to do in Avila.  Some of my favorite things include:

Golf Avila Beach Golf Resort – slope rating at 122 and 6443 yardage
Seaweed Express, a boat ride around the bay on a zodiac,
Kayak at Harford pier with SLO Coast Kayaks,
jet skis tours all the way to Pismo,
Hiking both the Pecho Trail and Bob Jones Trail or Shell Beach Bluffs
Bike riding the Bob Jones trail all the way to San Luis Obispo, bike-cycle or drive See Canyon on the back roads to SLO, especially during apple season in the fall
Sport fishing and whale watching with charter boats from the Harford pier at Avila
Wine tasting with several local wineries in Avila downtown
Hanging out on the beautiful beach.
Friday evening provides a local vendor farmers market with entertainment that has become very popular to attend.
